Lunar Nodes 101
your guide to how the nodes guide your destiny, life purpose, & personal evolution
Welcome back to my astrology classroom! Today’s lesson is on the lunar nodes. The nodes are not objects in the sky, rather, calculated points based on the sun’s ecliptic and the moon’s orbit. In a birth chart, the nodes are associated with fate, karma, and destiny. The nodes also play an important role during eclipse season, and I think it’s imperative to understand the impact of the lunar nodes before we can even discuss eclipse season! So, grab your notebooks and pencils, and let’s break it all down ↓
What *exactly* are the nodes?
Astronomically speaking, the lunar nodes are the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, which is the Sun’s apparent path through the sky. There are two nodes: the North Node (or ascending node) and the South Node (or descending node).
The North Node is where the Moon moves from south to north of the ecliptic, and the South Node is where it moves from north to south. These nodes are important because they’re the points where eclipses can occur. When the Sun, Moon, and Earth align with these nodes, that’s when we get eclipses—either solar or lunar.
In an astrology chart, the nodes are depicted by symbols that look like horseshoes. The nodes always come in a pair, so you will have both the North Node and South Node somewhere in your chart. Remember, the nodes will always be in opposite signs!
Astrological Significance
In Hellenistic astrology, the nodes were viewed as being unfavorable and ill-omened. Ancient astrologers advised against making any major decisions not only during an eclipse, but also whenever the transiting moon was aspecting a node at all.
However, modern astrology has given the lunar nodes a major glow-up and rebrand, positioning them as essential markers of personal and spiritual evolution. In our birth chart, the nodes represent our destiny, life purpose, and path to our higher self. They serve as a celestial compass that guides us toward the experiences and lessons our soul needs to evolve.
The North Node (NN) is what your soul is striving toward. It represents the qualities and challenges you must embrace to align with your higher potential. Because the NN is what we are moving towards, it doesn’t always feel natural or come easily to us. The NN can feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable. But remember, there is no growth in your comfort zone! Your NN invites you to step out of your comfort zone, explore new territory, and even make some mistakes… that’s what leads to fulfillment and a sense of purpose.
The South Node (SN), however, feels very comfortable. It represents what you’re used to, what is ingrained in you from childhood, or in a more spiritual context, your past lives. It represents the traits and skills you’ve already mastered (aka your comfort zone). While there is wisdom to be gained from the SN, it's not where growth happens. Relying too heavily on the SN can keep you stuck in familiar patterns, even when they no longer serve you.
Together, the nodes make up the karmic axis or nodal axis. Evolutionary astrologers, who read natal charts as the depiction of the soul’s journey across lifetimes, often interpret the South Node as a reflection of your past lives. It’s associated with your karmic baggage, unresolved lessons, or talents from previous incarnations on Earth. The North Node points to your soul’s intended direction—what you’re meant to develop, experience, and integrate in this life.

The Nodal Cycle
The story doesn’t stop in your birth chart. Just like the planets, the nodes move through the zodiac signs, continuing to influence you and impacting your birth chart. Each of us are on our own journey through the nodal cycle. There are three key transits involved:
Nodal Return
The nodal return happens about every 18-19 years, when the North Node returns to the exact same position it was in at the time of your birth. It’s a major moment of alignment with your life purpose and destiny. Think of it as a cosmic checkpoint where the universe asks, "Are you on track?" If you’ve been following your North Node path—challenging yourself, growing, and embracing those unfamiliar experiences—this time can feel like things are falling into place. But if you’ve been stuck in your comfort zone (hello, South Node!), the nodal return can feel like a wake-up call, pushing you to course-correct.
Timing: every 18-19 years; ages: 18-19, 37-38, 56-57, 74-75, and so on.
Nodal Opposition
Around the age of 9 and 27 (and again every 18 years), you’ll hit the nodal opposition, where the North and South Nodes have flipped positions in your chart. If the nodal return is a checkpoint, the nodal opposition is a crossroads. This is a big moment of self-reflection, where the universe challenges you to balance where you’ve been (SN) with where you’re going (NN). During a nodal opposition, you may feel like life is pulling you in two different directions—between what feels comfortable and what’s calling you forward. It’s a time to get real about whether you’re holding on to old patterns that are keeping you stuck or if you’re ready to step into your future.
Timing: occurs halfway through the nodal cycle; ages: 9, 27, 45, 63, 81, and so on
Nodal Square
The nodal square happens twice in the 18-year nodal cycle, roughly every 4.5 years. This is where the North and South Nodes form a tense 90-degree angle to their original positions, and things can feel a bit... stuck. The opening square happens first, before your nodal opposition. You may start to feel tension between what’s familiar and what’s new, which can create a sense of discomfort or unease. The closing square happens after your nodal opposition, but before your nodal return. During the closing square, you may feel an internal pressure to complete unfinished business, face unresolved challenges, or make necessary adjustments to stay aligned with your purpose. It’s the universe’s way of giving you one last chance to address any lingering resistance before the next nodal return.
Opening square timing: occurs 4.5 years after nodal return, ages: 4.5, 22-23, 40-41, 58-59, and so on.
Closing square timing: occurs 4.5 years before the next nodal return; ages: 13-14, 31-32, 49-50, 67-68, and so on.
Tip: The modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) can help you figure out when your big nodal aspects are coming up. If your North Node is in a Cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn), your squares and opposition will occur when the North Node is passing through the other Cardinal signs. The same goes for Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). It’s a handy way to easily track major nodal moments!
Transiting Nodes
Even if you are not actively experiencing your nodal return, opposition, or square… the nodes are still transiting somewhere in your chart, possibly even activating other planets or points.
To understand how each eclipse cycle will impact you, look to the axis in your chart being activated. Remember that the nodes are always in a pair, directly opposite from another. So instead of looking at just one house in your chart, you will have to consider the axis as a whole. Opposite signs often have the same overall theme or goal, but go about achieving that goal in a different way:
1st-7th House Axis: Self vs. Others
Balancing self-awareness with relating to others. Individuality versus collaboration.
1st House (Ascendant): Personal identity, appearance, self-image, how you initiate things
7th House (DC): Partnerships, relationships, marriage, the "other," one-on-one connections
2nd-8th House Axis: Resources vs. Shared Resources
Material security versus emotional/spiritual transformation. How personal values merge or clash with shared resources.
2nd House: Personal values, possessions, material wealth, self-worth, earning power
8th House: Shared resources, intimacy, transformation, death, rebirth, deep emotional bonds, other people’s money
3rd-9th House Axis: Learning vs. Higher Knowledge
Practical, immediate knowledge versus expansive, philosophical understanding. How we process and express information.
3rd House: Communication, local environment, siblings, everyday learning, short trips, immediate surroundings
9th House: Philosophy, higher education, long-distance travel, belief systems, religion, law, exploration
4th-10th House Axis: Home vs. Public Life
Private life versus public life. Personal roots and emotional security versus ambition and success in the outside world.
4th House (IC): Home, family, roots, ancestry, private life, emotional foundation
10th House (MC): Career, public reputation, authority, life goals, social status
5th-11th House Axis: Individual Expression vs. Group Identity
Creative self-expression versus collective identity. Finding a balance between personal joy and social contribution.
5th House: Creativity, pleasure, romance, children, personal hobbies, self-expression
11th House: Friendships, groups, social causes, community, hopes and dreams for the future
6th-12th House Axis: Physical Well-being vs. Spiritual Well-being
Managing the balance between practical reality and spiritual or unconscious awareness. Day-to-day life versus the need for inner reflection and escape.
6th House: Work, service, health, routines, daily responsibilities, practical duties
12th House: The unconscious, spirituality, isolation, hidden matters, dreams, transcendence, karma
By recognizing which axis is being activated, you can gain deeper insight into the themes emerging in your life during these powerful nodal transits. Be sure to take note where the NN and SN is… for instance, the NN transiting your 5H will have different themes than the NN in the 11H, despite being on the same axis. Remember, the NN represents what you are being called towards. It’s the way forward! Meanwhile, the SN informs what you are ready to resolve, heal, or leave behind.
Working with the Nodes
The North and South Nodes act like your personal GPS—showing where you’re meant to go and what you’re meant to let go of. So how do you actually work with them in your chart?
First, get to know your natal nodes. Take note of the sign and house they fall in. As you learn more about them, reflect on your past experiences and try to find instances when they have showed up. For example, I have a Libra NN / Aries SN. I have always been independent… perhaps so independent that I struggle to ask for help when I need it! My nodes fall in my 4H-10H axis, so these themes appear most often in my home life and career.
Second, reflect back on your nodal cycle. What was happening in your life during your last nodal return, opposition, or square? How have you evolved, grown, or even gone backwards in these areas? My favorite tip for jogging your memory is to look at your old calendar, journal/diary, and photos!
Third, tune into the transiting nodes and where they currently are in your chart. Maybe you are experiencing a major nodal transit, or maybe they are somewhere else in your chart. Perhaps they are activating a planet, pulling its planetary themes into your current nodal narrative.
As mentioned previously, the nodes play an important role in eclipse season. In order for an eclipse to occur, the new or full moon must happen near a node. The nodes become activated during eclipse season, and that’s when you may feel their energy and influence the most, but that’s a whole other Substack.
I think it’s best to remember that the nodal cycle is a slow burn. It’s a transformation over an 18-19 year period. The internet (social media, to be more specific) talks about transits as if they are a one-and-done type of event. This type of content can invoke fear or dread, or it can make it seem like if nothing ~special~ happens, we aren’t worthy of the universe’s gifts. But when you take a step back and look at the full nodal cycle, you will be truly amazed at the growth you have experienced, the opportunities the universe offered you, and the best version of yourself that you are slowly becoming.
